When the owner of a printing shop is found dead, the District Attorney assumes that it was a suicide. But the Assistant D.A., Howard Malloy, suspects that there is a connection with an extremist political group called the ‘Crusaders’. When a journalist whose articles had attacked the Crusaders is also killed, Malloy is convinced. With help from the widow of a prominent judge, he conducts an investigation. As he does so, he meets a peculiar political boss and also an attractive night club singer, each of whom could become either a source of help or a source of danger.

Squire Pierre St. Laurent returns from wars in India to 17th-century provincial France to find his estate confiscated by governor Narbonne, for back taxes, and resold to Katrina, a Dutch Countess. Katrina offers to return Pierre’s property if he will help her get possession of the ‘Star of India,’ a fabulous sapphire, held at the moment by Narbonne. The Dutch government wants it returned to its Indian worshipers, in order to keep peace. Pierre is a guest at Narbonne’s château during a visit from King Louis IV, who wants to acquire the sapphire for his new court-favorite, Mme. de Montespan. During the 1950s, a Texas oilman is visiting oil rich Venezuela. There he meets some old friends who own several oil derricks. Unfortunately, one of the derricks is on fire and the owners don’t have any professional trained in extinguishing oil derrick fires. Despite the oil derrick being located offshore, the blaze could get out of control and cause an explosion which could affect the other 6000 oil derricks in the area. The locals still remember the great fire that engulfed the nearby town during a similar incident back in 1939. Fortunately, the visiting Texas oilman, Vic Scott, is an expert in extinguishing oil derrick fires. During WW2, Vic had been an underwater demolition expert with the U.S. Navy.
