‘Bing Edwards (Eddie Albert), up for the baseball coaching job at Virginia Military Institute, is summoned to New York City by fellow-VMI grad Billy Randolph (Wayne Morris), who is going to “fix” everything for Bing, as his father, Sterling Randolph (Thurston Hall) is one of the alumni who will make the final decision. Everything is “fixed” so good that meddling Billy gets thrown out of his father’s home. Big loses the job and their friend, Dan Crawford (Ronald Reagan) loses his job, with Billy responsible for all of the trouble. They all move into the apartment of the uncle Mr. Harper (Berton Churchill) of southern belle Kate (Jane Bryan) Kate, bringing more havoc to the already sticky-situation. Billy eventually pulls a publicity stunt involving the baby “Commencent” (Peter Good) that gets them all jobs with Mr. Harper’s airline.

Given that most publicity releases of the time (and also now) are best when taken with several grains of salt, this may or may not be true: Dr. David Newcome lives with his wife Jessica and son Gerald in the small English town of Calderbury. Jessica, conventional and somewhat stupid, is unable to understand the sensitive little boy and her stern, unsympathetic discipline aggravates Gerald’s nervousness. Schuster’s found dead in his basement apartment, Laxter’s nurse Louise is murdered with Schuster’s crutch, and circumstantial evidence brings Doug to trial for Louise’s death. This film proves the old adage “You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you shouldn’t pick friends who rob banks.” Local bad girl Hilda convinces Connie to join her at a party and lends Connie a dress she “borrowed” from the cleaners where they both work. When the dress gets torn, the owner Jane and her boyfriend Neil notice and Connie gets blamed, fired, and prosecuted for it. Neil is the prosectuing attorney, but feels sorry for Connie, so he drops the charges and loans her the money to pay off the dress. Connie goes to the big city to escape the shame and get a job to pay off Neil. She meets Hilda there and gets mistakenly arrested, along with Hilda and Tony, for bank robbery. A kindly parole officer believes her story and helps get her paroled. Connie returns home, gets engaged to Neal and is doing well when Hilda returns once more and threatens to ruin her life by spilling Connie’s secret shame.
