It’s the late nineteenth century. Trying to develop a ranch on an isolated and rugged property in Big Sur country in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Zandy Allan answers the newspaper advertisement of a woman, Hannah Lund, living in Minneapolis looking to get married to a western homesteader. Zandy is looking more for someone to help on the ranch than he is a wife, although one of her “duties” is to bore him a son. While they do not get off on the best start in she being a good ten years older than she stated at age thirty-six, closer to the end of her child bearing years than the beginning, they nonetheless decide to go ahead with the wedding. The question then becomes if they can ever bridge their differences to make their relationship work, Zandy who has very specific views of life on the ranch with his wife, it modeled on his parents’ marriage, Ma Allan if being truthful would probably say that theirs is nowhere close to being even a remotely good model, while Hannah is not the subservient wife Zandy expected, she with her own wants and needs which she is not afraid stand up to him to get.

Triple murders are rare enough in Sweden that they qualify as headline-grabbing national news for prolonged periods of time. This movie is based on the story behind one such incident, which took place in 1988. A girl and a boy from Finland have traveled to Denmark, where they support themselves by various mildly nefarious means, generally small burglaries. The boy is captured for one of these crimes and does some jail time, while the girl tries to make a go of it on her own. However, when her aggressive young lover gets out of jail, she takes off with him to Sweden. There, they engage in ever-more daring criminal feats, until one day they murder a married couple and their teenaged son while they are visiting a cemetery. According to reviewers, there is a sense of inevitability in the progress of the story, which focuses on the alienation and isolation of these two congenital outsiders.

Based on the novel by Per Olaf Sundman, Ingenjör Andrées Luftfärd (Flight of the Eagle) tells the real-life story of a Swedish engineer’s attempted expedition to the North Pole in a balloon. Jan Troell directs this over two-hour adventure drama set in 1897. Max Von Sydow stars as Salomon August Andrée, the engineer who leads the tragic journey in a balloon called The Ornen (The Eagle). He is accompanied by explorers Nils Strindberg (Goran Stangertz) and Knut Fraenkel (Sverre Anker Ousdal). Ingenjör Andrées Luftfärd was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in the 1983 Academy Awards. Using his experiences making this film, Troell went on to make the hour-long documentary En Frusen Drom (A Frozen Dream) in 1998 with archival information from the remains of the expedition found in 1930 on an island near the North Pole.

This film continues from where The Emigrants / Utvandrarna (1971) left off. Starting a new life in the New World from almost nothing is not easy. The winters and summers are more extreme than in the Old World. But the immigrants are rewarded for their hard work. They now live a better life than they did in Sweden. Bad times also come, however. The civil war starts and the Sioux Indians make a bloody uprising against the white settlers. Karl-Oskar’s family survives all these. His brother, Robert, decides to seek his fortune in the gold fields of California. He never reaches California but acquires some fortune from his boss who dies of yellow fever on the way to the gold fields. An immigrant Swede dupes him of this fortune. Robert returns to his brother where he dies from a disease contracted on the trip. Kristina, whose thoughts never leave Sweden, has several more births and gets pregnant again against the advice of her doctor. This last pregnancy kills her. The children grow up and take over the farm. Karl-Oskar becomes old and lonely. He spends his last days dreaming of his youth in the Old World.
