The summer of 1940, Pilot Officer T.B. Baird arrives straight out of flight school to join a front line RAF squadron at the height of the Battle of Britain. Regimental Sergeant-Major Lauderdale is a spit-and-polish, by-the-book disciplinarian, who seems like a 19th Century anachronism in a sleepy peacetime African outpost of the modern British Commonwealth. He is ridiculed behind his back by his subordinate NCO’s and must play host to a liberal female MP making a tour of the base. However, when an ambitious African officer, who happens to be a protege of the MP’s, initiates a coup d’etat against Captain Abraham, the lawful African commandant, the resourceful RSM uses all his military training to arm his men despite being under house arrest and rescue the wounded commandant from a certain firing squad. When Lt. Boniface, the leader of the mutiny surrounds the sergeants mess with two Bofors guns, it looks like Lauderdale will have to surrender unless he again disobeys orders and takes the initiative.

American Anna Vorontosov teaches in a rural school on New Zealand’s North Island. Her class of younger students is comprised largely of Maoris. She feels that western methods are not the most appropriate in teaching her students, for who concepts such as “see Jane run” have no cultural context. She wants her students to “feel”, from love to pain to joy, and as such her classes are outwardly disorganized and chaotic. Her livelihood is potentially threatened with the arrival of a new senior inspector of primary schools, a Brit name William Abercrombie. To make her classes seem more organized to Abercrombie, Anna enlists the help of one of the older students, fifteen year old Maori, Whareparita. Anna’s students, including Whareparita, see her as their guardian angel. Anna’s burgeoning friendship with Whareparita may show her that although she has her students’ best interests at heart, she may also not fully understand the culture within which she now lives.

In 1821, British seaman Phillip Wayne sets foot on New Zealand where he befriends a Maori tribe and their chief, Hongi Tepe. The chief takes a liking to Wayne and invites him to come back to settle. On his return to England, Wayne’s captain asks him to bring ashore a chest full of silk, possibly without being detected by the Customs agents. When Customs agents stop Wayne and search his chest they discover beneath the silks two shrunken heads of Maori warriors. Wayne realizes too late that his captain is involved in trafficking native shrunken heads that can fetch high prices on the illegal market in England. Arrested and condemned for the smuggling of this type of illegal artifact Wayne is banned from working as a seaman and he is fined. At this stage Wayne decides to marry his fiancée Marion and to return to New Zealand to settle there. He brings with him a handful of settlers but coexistence with the savage, cannibal, warlike Maori won’t be easy.

Someone has broken into the safe of a London company, and yet no force or explosive was used, and the keys do not appear to have been lost. A police superintendent is investigating, assisted by a new and very keen sergeant. The superintendent’s wife is worried that he may be in personal danger, and the superintendent is not always mindful of the need to reassure his wife. Then a safe in another business is also robbed without the use of force, but the robber’s getaway car runs down a bystander, who later dies. There seems to be nothing to link the crimes, but then the getaway car is found abandoned in a scrap yard. A discarded newspaper in the car may be a crucial lead in solving the crime, but there isn’t much to go on.
