Two criminal gangs are ruthlessly fighting for a 1-million dollar check that, purely by chance, got into the flat of shy high school teacher George Camel. A tram pasted with posters travels through Prague. The mounted loudspeakers invite passers-by to a series of concerts of Giuseppe Verdi’s masterpieces. On the tram, a party of young people is getting drunk. They all either work or study, but they hang out together at parties and restaurants. Irena fancies the photographer Pavelka but he prefers the waitress Alena. Petr alias Sunny [Sluní?ko] lives in a trailer at the bank of Vltava and is practising for an original theatre performance of his own. He has shaved his head and when he gets drunk, his friends paint a picture of the Sun on it. Their relationships are very liberal and so when Irena gets pregnant she and Pavelka discuss whether she should raise her child as a single mother. Pavelka denies that he is the father of her child. When the party visit the cabaret at the U Flek? tavern, they all laugh at the decadent humour. Irena is the only one who doesn’t laugh. She grows sad when she hears a joke about a knocked up car and a “knocked up” daughter. A television crew wants to do a feature on Petr but he is unsure about it and finally kicks them out. Alena has lost her job as a waitress and works as a cleaning woman. In a fierce argument, she admits to Pavelka that she went to bed with somebody else too…

Fadinard is on the way to his wedding when his horse picks up and eats a straw hat. The owner of the hat is a married woman who, at the time, is in the embrace of a French officer, Lieutenant Tavernier. The officer follows Fadinard to his new home and demands that he finds a substitute hat so that his mistress can return home to her husband without arousing suspicion. Fearing that Tavernier will wreck his new apartment, Fadinard hastens away to his wedding, using every opportunity he can to find a replacement hat. When finally he does manage to find the elusive hat, things becomes even more complicated…

A tragicomic film about people from the social periphery. Director Dušan Hanák portrayed his characters with a sensitive understanding, without romanticizing. That was also why the f ilm, similarly to Hanák’s previous works 322 and Pictures of the Old World, ended up on a shelf until 1988. Impressive performances are given by Czech actress Iva Janžurová, Polish actor Roman Klosowski and Serbian actor Milan Jeli?. In 1989, the film won a Silver Bear for Best Directing from the IFF Berlin.

This 1980 Czechoslovakian drama and romantic comedy was withheld from release for almost ten years, and was taken out of the censorship vaults in 1989 going directly to be In Competition in that year’s Berlinale, where won the Silver Bear for Best Director and the FIPRESCI Prize –Honorable Mention for Slovak Dusan Hanák its director.
