July 13, 1808 in the Charenton Insane Asylum just outside Paris. The inmates of the asylum are mounting their latest theatrical production, composed and created by who’s possibly the most well-known inmate of the centre, the Marquis de Sade. The asylum’s director, M. Coulmier, a supporter of the present French regime headed by Napoleon, promotes this artistic expression as treatment for those inmates, while providing the viewer — that the aristocracy — a feeling that they’re being innovative in inmate remedies. Coulmier since the master of ceremonies, his wife and kid in particular places of honour, along with the cast, all of whom are doing the drama in the asylum’s bath home, are separated by the crowd by prison bars. The drama is a retelling of a time from the French Revolution combined with the assassination just fifteen years before of radical Jean-Paul Marat by peasant woman, Charlotte Corday. The drama would be to reply if Marat was a friend or foe to the people of France.

Barton is a soldier in WW2 England; he meets Alice, who is looking after her farm single-handed as her husband is a prisoner of the Japanese. Barton stays overnight and they get friendly, and he decides to desert and stay with Alice. They become lovers. As a cover, she tells people in the village that her sister is staying with her, and Barton dresses the part. He has mixed feelings about the feminine role but evidently grows accustomed to it. Eventually an army sergeant comes to the farm, and is glad to learn that there are two unattached women there; he has sexual designs on them. Alice rebuffs him and he concentrates on Barton, as “Cathy”. Barton is flattered by the attention, and foolishly agrees to go to a Christmas dance at the army base with the sergeant, obviously not realising that sexual activity will be involved, despite Alice’s warnings. At the party, Barton realises what is developing, but can’t escape, and the Sergeant won’t take no for an answer.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is given the Ken Russell treatment in The Music Lovers, which means that there is plenty of music, plenty of passion, plenty of debauchery, and plenty of excess. Tame by Russell’s later standards (Lisztomania), The Music Lovers nevertheless thrives on creative and sexual anguish. Richard Chamberlain plays Tchaikovsky with a bug-eyed intensity as a composer consumed by his art – so consumed that his romantic attachments become bisexual and irrational. He falls in love with Nina (Glenda Jackson), the hysterical trollop he marries with dire consequences. As he explodes emotionally, his public performance of Piano Concerto in B flat minor becomes a cue for flashbacks to a series of discomforting childhood events that suggest incestuous relations with his sister. Back in real time, Tchaikovsky has to deal with Nina’s outbursts while juggling his homosexual urges and his almost hidden desire for Count Anton Chiluvsky (Christopher Gable). The film also details the curious relationship between Tchaikovsky and his rich patroness, the middle-aged widow Madame Nadedja von Meck (Isabella Telezynska), who loves Tchaikovsky deeply, but refuses to meet him – their only communication being through letters, even though he lives on her estate. Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky’s music.
