In 1860s Texas, ranch hand Mike Reno has a fist fight with his ranch owner uncle over some unpaid wages. Mike is finally paid his back wages and heads for the nearest town where he gambles his wages away in a saloon. Unhappy about the loss, Mike starts a disturbance in the saloon and he is promptly arrested by local Marshal Gideon McCool. In jail, Mike is awaiting the next transport to the larger Huntsville territorial prison. Also awaiting transfer to the prison is fellow jailbird Aaron Pleasant who was arrested for mistakenly shooting a child in the dark street and subsequently sentenced to death by hanging.

Jim “Tex” Wall (George Montgomery), searching for the last of the three men who raped and killed his wife, joins a gang of cattle rustlers led by Hank Hays (Richard Boone). Both Hays’ outlaws and a rival gang headed by Heesman (Peter Graves), have been hired as ranch hands by “Bull” Herrick (Bruce Bennett), a cripple who owns a large cattle ranch and wants to get his large herd to market. He theorizes that the two gangs will be kept busy watching each other and neither will rustle his cattle. Helen (Sylvia Findley) has little faith in her brother’s contrived plan, and hates and distrusts both groups. She begins to soften toward Jim, but abruptly changes when she sees a reward poster which says he has killed two men.

Marlowe’s involvement has him encounter a girl who goes into hysterics when touched by a man; a husband-killing woman; three corpses; a couple of scuffles in which he gets his clock cleaned; a secretary who thinks she has killed her boss, which is the reason Raymond Chandler called his story “The High Window”, and a son (who qualifies as a S.O.B. by two definitions) who blackmails his widowed mother. So, what’s not to like.
