The Pooles are unable to have a baby after years of trying. They apply to the Rock-A-Bye Adoption Agency, and are assigned Miss Novick as an investigator. Through a farfetched mis-communication she gets a very bad impression of Augie Poole and indicates her report will be unfavorable. Through even more far-fetched circumstances, Augie is able to change Miss Novick’s mind, and later comes to believe the baby she is carrying is his. Rock-A-Bye does find the Pooles a baby, and Augie is convinced it is Miss Novick’s, and that he is the real father…so much so that his wife comes to believe it, too. She threatens to leave him, but all the misunderstandings are finally cleared up for a happy ending.

It is the year 1830. However, her guardians, her aunt and uncle, aiming to get rich, insist that she marry Don Pedro, the town mayor, an arrogant and bullying much older man. She resigns herself to her fate but before the wedding, in nearby Port Sebastian, she meets by chance a troupe of traveling circus actors, led by the handsome Serafin. Attracted to each another but, while Serafin wants to woo Manuela, she refuses his advances claiming to be promised in marriage to Don Pedro. At the circus show, during a hypnosis act, Serafin learns that Manuela is secretly enamored of Macoco. This revelation persuades Serafin to resort to a trick to woo her. He pretends to be the famous pirate Macoco and he plays the part well, assisted by the complicity of his troupe. His performance is so well-executed that it convinces everyone, including Manuela, that he truly is Macoco the pirate. Unfortunately, it also convinces the local authorities and the visiting Spanish Viceroy that he is a wanted pirate. Serafin, masquerading as Macoco, is arrested by the Spanish troops. Despite his pleas that he only is a circus actor impersonating a pirate, he is found guilty of piracy, partly on fake evidence supplied by a fearful and jealous Don Pedro. Serafin, aka Macoco the pirate, is sentenced to death by hanging. Only a miracle can save his neck but Serafin and Manuela manage to arrange one.

The editors on the first two compilations celebrating MGM musicals surpassed those two features by coming up with new material–excluded numbers from Singin’ in the Rain, Cabin in the Sky, The Harvey Girls, Easter Parade, and even the underrated I Love Melvin—-and also critiquing many of the studio’s original decisions, aesthetically as well as politically and socially. Lena Horne, for instance, does an excellent job of unpacking some of their racist policies. And the others who introduce various segments, some of which feature their own work, include June Allyson, Cyd Charisse, Howard Keel, Gene Kelly, Ann Miller, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, and Esther Williams. What emerges from all this is a sharp history lesson as well as a complex and nuanced appreciation of what Hollywood could do at its best as well as its worst. One emblematic moment gives us Joan Crawford in blackface in Torch Song singing “Two-Faced Woman” while Charisse in split-screen is lip-syncing India Adams’ rendition of the same song from a number that got cut from The Band Wagon.
