Mike Reese, yellow journalist and antihero, prints a story that leads to a gang killing, and is blacklisted from the city papers under suspicion of ties with racketeer Carl Durham. So, with a shrug, he makes the suspicion come true, then elbows his way into the editorship of the local paper in a small town where, opportunely, a sensational murder case threatens to destroy the family of newspaper magnate E.J. Stanton. When a black servant is made the patsy for this killing, Reese helps himself by helping her…but proves a dangerous ally.

An itinerant troupe of show-biz folks arrives in Cactus Creek. This band of traveling players consists of a hammy Shakespearean actor named Tracy Holland; Lily Martin,an ex-hoofer, and the young ingénue, Julie Martin. Edward Timmons is the show’s combination prop man, stage manager and extra, who has aspiration of becoming an actor. While the show is going on, local badman and leader of a bank-robbing gang, “Rimrock” Thomas steals everything that isn’t nailed down. This leads to several complications.

Her Uncle Willie signs it for her, however, as she is under age. Taking the name and credentials of Susie Smith, the secretary of her employer, Hartman, she disappears and enrolls at Rawley College. There she meets Buzz, leading a college band, and Scoop, running a college newspaper, who induces her to become a reporter. The Crunchy-Wunchy company institute a search for Joan via a publicity stunt, and Scoop assigns Joan to write an editorial against this kind of bad publicity. The Abernathy Products Company institutes a nation-wide contest to find the best college band, and Rawley College is entered, with Babs, the band’s soloist, coached by Joan. Brothers Mike and Tim McCall own a large ranch in Arizona, using the surrounding lands for grazing cattle. Stanley Cox and LeRoy Stanton sell this land to settlers who arrive to find it bone dry, as a dam on the McCall ranch controls the water. Among the settlers are John Dawson and his daughter Connie. The latter goes to the nearest town to take action, but Sheriff Ball tells him there is nothing he can do. Tim falls for Connie but Mike is unimpressed with her charms. While returning from a town dance, Tim discovers Stanton trying to dynamite the dam, and is killed in the ensuing gunfight. Stanton later sends his men to stampede the cattle while he and Cox blow up the dam. Despite the efforts of Mike and Sheriff Ball, the cattle are wiped out and Mike races to the dam and kills Stanton in a gunfight.
