August 24, 1937: a day in the life of expressionist sculptor and author Ernst Barlach. Barlach lives in the small town of Güstrow, keeping to himself, not interested in politics. One day he learns that the Nazis have dragged his famous 1927 sculpture “The Hovering Angel” – which bears the features of German artist Käthe Kollwitz – out of the Güstrow Cathedral. Barlach begins to reflect on his life of “inner emigration” and on his work, which has been either confiscated or denounced as “degenerate art” by the Nazis. Although he realizes active opposition is needed, he no longer has the strength. In 1966, this film was banned by East German/DDR officials, who considered it “mystical,” with “existentialist interpretations of art and power.” It was released in a shortened version only in 1971.

This story of mistaken identity was taken from the experiences of writer Hermann Kant when he was a 19-year-old soldier in the German Wehrmacht. In the film, the soldier is drafted into the army just after the siege of Stalingrad in 1943 and is taken prisoner in Poland, where a mother has accused him of being the SS man who killed her daughter earlier in the war. While in prison he is given dangerous work in the prison yard but survives intact. Eventually, the soldier hears about the extermination camps of Lublin, Auschwitz and other sites, and has changed his feelings toward the army. Meanwhile, his case is coming up for review and even a jail companion from his same army unit is afraid to come to his defense because of possible repercussions.

As a painter in the court of King Carlos IV, Goya – played by the great Lithuanian actor Donatas Banionis (The Red Tent, Solaris) – has attained wealth and reputation. He believes in King and Church, yet he is also a Spaniard who dearly loves his people.

This contradiction presents him with a dilemma. Based on Lion Feuchtwanger’s novel, Goya is one of ten East German films originally shot in 70mm. This release is the director’s cut and shows the influence of great filmmakers from Buñuel and Saura, to Eisenstein. Goya was nominated for the Golden Prize at the 1971 Moscow International Film Festival.

Director: Konrad Wolf
Writer: Lion Feuchtwanger (novel), Angel Vagenshtain (scenario), Konrad Wolf
Actors: Donatas Banionis, Olivera Katarina, Fred Düren, Tatyana Lolova

Revered Lithuanian actor Donatas Banionis wields the masterful brush of celebrated Spanish artist Don Francisco de Goya Lucientes in this biopic shot in 70 mm and directed by Konrad Wolf.

Having attained boundless wealth and iconic status as a painter in the court of King Carlos IV, Goya falls head over heels for a beautiful princess while becoming increasingly separated from the suffering of the Spanish people. Upon hearing singer Maria Rosario sing revolutionary ballads in a Madrid tavern, however, the detached artist finds becomes better acquainted with the popular singer while growing more reflective than ever before. Later, when Marie is brought before the Inquisition, Goya is invited to witness her trial and becomes acutely aware of the dangers he should face should he be bold enough to follow her example and stray from the official path. Over time Goya finds himself unable to resist the temptation to leave the castle and reconnect with the common people, a daring action that fuels his creativity while simultaneously highlighting his disloyalty in the eyes of the Inquisition.
