After their feature debut PLASTIC UTOPIA was deemed too strange by most festival programmers, the brothers Zellner responded like any truly independent, outsider filmmakers would: by making something even stranger. Filtering Soviet propaganda through a mouthful of powerful East Texas psychedelics, the unblinkingly straight-faced FRONTIER ostensibly adapts a “literary masterpiece” from the nation of “Bulbovia,” dutifully capturing the Bulbovian people’s rituals of frontier building, national conquest, accordion-based folk songs and raw-chicken duels. Strangers in a strange land, Bulbovia’s dimmest explorers (David Zellner and Wiley Wiggins) attempt to dutifully colonize a new world but soon find their buttoned-up shirts and rational thoughts melting away into beetle-eating, tree-molesting, wife-swapping chaos. Like a Guy Maddin remake of AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD or STALKER’s metaphysical “zone” as day-dreamed by some drunken Austin-ite, FRONTIER takes classic art-film tropes and obsessively builds its strange own zero-budgeted world out of them. Shot entirely in “Bulbovian,” it also awakened its star Wiley Wiggins to his heritage. “During the shoot,” David Zellner later claimed in an interview, “Wiley found out he was one-quarter Bulbovian.”

Dedicated but surprisingly inept mime James wants to do something with his life. He wants a grand destiny, or at least not to be a lonely pariah all the time. His landlord’s mother seems to think the Messiah is coming soon, so that’s a possibility…except everyone’s pretty sure it’s going to be local legend Corduroy Boy, a fabric-colored lunatic who few have ever actually seen. He could try to be a career criminal like his suave roommate Frank, except that he’s no better at that than he is at mime. And of course there’s the nun he’s trying to woo, but even she won’t give him the time of day.

Annie is girl with no moral compass, thanks to a complete lack of parental supervision. One day, while playing in the woods, a voice calls out to her from deep within an abandoned well, causing her to consider the right course of action.

On the outskirts of Austin, 10-year-old Annie tears around on her BMX bike, hurls dough at cars, and smashes things up with her baseball bat. Her father, a goat farmer-cum-demolition derby driver, does little parenting. Annie has no friends her age, so her daily routine is filled with solitary mischief. Playing in the woods one day, she hears a woman’s plaintive call for help from an abandoned well. Though Annie feels driven to visit the well daily, she is unsure about how to deal with the woman’s plight.

Spearheaded by phenomenal pint-sized lead Sydney Aguirre, this challenging third feature from the Zellner Brothers retains much of their provocative trademark idiocy but navigates darker waters, potentially broadening their loyal fanbase.
