In 1990, as a boy, Giulio was chased through the woods by two women after spying on them practicing witchcraft. Now a young film student in Turin, he watches his neighbors in the flats across from his third floor apartment, especially Sasha when she’s naked or arguing with her mother. Giulio’s girlfriend is disgusted with his voyeurism, but, after a murder occurs, Giulio is convinced that two relative strangers, just as in Hitchcock and Highsmith’s “Strangers in a Train,” have agreed to murder each other’s bête noir. He follows his suspects, ends up with an intruder and a broken foot, and may be in real danger. Is he more than a peeping Tom?

Marco Bellocchio’s My Mother’s Smile was deemed blasphemous by the Roman Catholic Church for what the Church referred to as Bellocchio’s “systematic destruction of family and religious values.” Contrary to the Church’s presumptions about Bellocchio, My Mother’s Smile is a fascinating portrait of a man (Sergio Castellitto as Ernesto) who is forced to reconcile with his own atheism after receiving a shocking appeal from the Church requesting his participation in the canonization of his “saintly” mother.

Ernesto, un affermato pittore, apprende che vogliono fare santa sua madre. Tenuto all’oscuro di tutto dalla sua famiglia, è particolarmente colpito perché la vicenda contrasta con il suo mondo di artista e di uomo libero e ateo. Le iniziative affinché partecipi al processo di beatificazione si fanno sempre più pressanti, mentre il ricordo della madre apre una voragine che lo spinge a rielaborare il passato e a vivere diversamente il presente.

Ernesto, un peintre et un illustrateur de contes pour enfants, vit séparé de sa femme et a un petit garçon auquel il est très attaché. Un jour, il apprend par le mystérieux Don Pugni (secrétaire d’un non moins énigmatique Cardinal Piumini) que l’on veut faire de sa mère une sainte. Il est stupéfait par cette nouvelle, d’une part parce que sa famille lui a toujours caché la vérité et de l’autre parce qu’elle est en opposition totale avec sa personnalité d’artiste libre et athée. En l’espace de quelques heures, sa famille qui voudrait le contraindre à participer au processus de béatification, multiplie les pressions et les conflits ne tardent pas à exploser. C’est en se souvenant de sa mère et de son sourire qu’Ernesto va entreprendre une révision de son passé qui l’amènera également à vivre le présent de manière différente.
