Graduation Party / Festa di laurea (1985) Pupi Avati, Carlo Delle Piane, Aurore Clément, Lidia Broccolino

rarefilm — Wed, 08 May 2024 14:05:59 +0000

Festa di Laurea (graduation party) is a film about times of change. The story is set at the end of World War II. A middle aged working class man who has just started his own bakery trying to mass produce pastry for the expected influx of mass tourism on the Adriatic has agreed to prepare a completely run down beach house with an overgrown garden for a graduation party. The weekend house and garden are owned by rich townspeople. The man’s mother once was their cook, and the man fell eternally in love with the family’s daughter when she kissed him in a moment of senseless euphoria (the cause of the excitement being Fascist Italy’s entry into war against France). The graduation party is given for this woman’s daughter, and the working class man cannot but accept the request of his secret love.

Together with three oddball youngsters the man does the almost impossible and prepares the party on the given extremely tight schedule although he is treated with the utmost contempt by his employers. It’s plainly visible here how deeply you can fall when you’re in love and how “positive thinking” can save you even then from mental breakdown. The story builds up to a surprise ending that is at the same time nasty and strangely consoling.

Dear Father / Caro papà (1979) Dino Risi, Vittorio Gassman, Aurore Clément, Andrée Lachapelle

rarefilm — Mon, 07 Nov 2022 12:53:31 +0000

In Caro papá, Dino Risi is telling the narrative of this wholesome lifestyle, and dysfunctional family, of a wealthy businessman (played to perfection by Risi’s favourite top man, Vittorio Gassman). Risi paints his portrait from a background of an Italy in which the new permissiveness has run rampant, conventional socio-cultural values are usurped by consumerism, and the roads have turned into an open battleground for politically extremist groups.

Tomorrow We Move / Demain on déménage (2004) Chantal Akerman, Sylvie Testud, Aurore Clément, Jean-Pierre Marielle

rarefilm — Mon, 30 May 2022 14:11:42 +0000

The late Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman brings us an intellectual comedy about a mother and daughter who find themselves living together for the first time in decades. Charlotte, a freelance writer, invites her recently widowed mother, Catherine, to live in her apartment, and the ensuing clutter becomes a source of irritation and strife. When Catherine decides to revitalize her career as a piano teacher, the claustrophobia reaches new and absurd levels. Charlotte continues to pursue her desperate quest for peace as Tomorrow We Move develops into a slyly Jewish tale of rootlessness and familial burdens.

Dear Michael / Caro Michele (1976) Mario Monicelli, Mariangela Melato, Delphine Seyrig, Aurore Clément

rarefilm — Sun, 18 Apr 2021 15:12:57 +0000

Michael is the younger son of a middle-class family, a strong-willed and free-thinking fellow, who is off in some distant country fighting for a revolutionary cause. Everyone in the family writes to him, describing the events of their lives, as they drift into a kind of conventionality which would perhaps have horrified them earlier. Only Michael’s girlfriend Mara (Mariangela Melato), the mother of his child, retains her independence, even though it is through the help of Michael’s increasingly conventional friends and family that she survives.

Philippe is really happy, and retrieves from Gérard’s backyard a rock mind — of the goddess Flora — which his mum had given Gérard. In the marriage of one of the sisters, Philippe matches Senta, a unique and moody young lady: they fall fast in love, regardless of her strange behaviors and Philippe’s general sense. Senta declares a strategy for them to establish their love for each other; it entails poetry, tree planting, and even murder.
