Linda Linda Linda tells the story of a group of girls, Kei, Kyoko, and Nozomi, who decide to put together a band for their school festival. Two days before they are to play the festival, the guitarist and singer quit the band. The remaining members must figure out what to do or risk cancelling, so they decide to enlist a Korean foreign exchange student, Son, to head the band despite not being fluent in Japanese. The girls decide to perform covers of The Blue Hearts songs, such as Linda Linda and My Right Hand.

With school children all over the country growing increasingly delinquent, the Japanese government takes decisive action and introduces the Battle Royale Act. The Act sets forth a plan whereby a class will be chosen at random and flown to a remote island, where each student will then be given a weapon and set loose to fight their classmates, each student knowing that only one of their number will be allowed to leave the island alive. When Class B of Zentsuji Middle School are chosen to take part in the massacre, the different students quickly take sides against each other, but Shuya and Noriko form an alliance and try to weather it through together.

There have been contrasting cries of “greatest film ever made” and “pointless gore fest” made about BR, and neither are accurate in my opinion. What it is, is a commentary about “perceived” (real or otherwise) problems among Japanese teens in the late 90’s.

In one review, someone basically likened it to a movie involving young Japanese girls running around in school uniforms acting violent….DUH, thats the whole point. A lot of peoples only knowledge of Japan is Manga and Hentai.

If people bothered to watch the news once in awhile, they may know that the establishment in Japan were VERY worried about young people getting out of control, and BR portrays all this perfectly.

Its NOT ultra violent, although the fact that they are supposed to be teens makes it disturbing. Battle Royale is no worse than Lord of the flies, but for some reason that has been deified as a work of art, and BR is classed as trash. I’d say its more about cultural snobbery than actual appreciation of a truly magnificent film.
