Susan “Sue” Trinder is a fingersmith (British slang for thief) who lives in the slums of London with a baby farmer (person who looks after unwanted babies) Mrs.Sucksby. When a once rich man, who gambled all his money away, presents them with a scam that has a payout of 40,000 pounds, Sue signs on to swindle rich Maud Lilly. Maud is an orphan who lives with her uncle, but what exactly is going on in the Lilly house? Sue will pose as Maud’s maid so that Mr. Rivers (the gentleman) can get close to and eventually marry her. Their plan is to put Maud in the madhouse and take the money for themselves. All goes astray though when Sue falls in love with Maud. And the question is: Who can you trust?

In 1912 pompous industrialist Arthur Birling, who has hopes of a knighthood, his superior wife Sybil and young son Eric are celebrating the engagement of daughter Sheila to eligible Gerald Croft when they are visited by blunt Inspector Goole. He tells them of the suicide of a young woman named Eva Smith and though they all claim not to have known her the inspector demonstrates that each in their own way contributed to her downfall, by having her dismissed from work or, in the young men’s cases, having sexual relationships and then abandoning her. After Goole has left the youngsters feel ashamed and the engagement is halted but Arthur Birling, doubting the inspector’s authority, rings the local police station. This is the prelude to a double shock which will lead to the family’s humiliation and ruin.

In 1953 poet Dylan Thomas arrives in New York with his assistant and lover Liz Reitell to embark upon a tour of poetry readings, ending up in California where he hopes to meet Stravinsky. He is perpetually drunk, almost missing meetings, throwing up and taking a paranoid view of his long-suffering agent John Brinnin, whom he accuses of trying to defraud him. Whilst staying at the Chelsea hotel he recalls his upbringing in Wales, his affectionate exchange with his proud, ailing father – the inspiration for the poem ‘Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night’ – and his time with his wife Caitlin and daughter Aeronwy, as he writes ‘ Under Milk Wood’. Whilst he patches things up with John, his infidelity to both wife and mistress angers Liz and his excessive drinking ensures that he never gets to meet Stravinsky or survive beyond another few months.
