Two Lieutenants, Chard of Engineers and Bromhead find that their 140 man contingent in Natal has been isolated by the destruction of the main British Army column and that 4,000 Zulu warriors will descend on them in hours. Each has a different military background in tactics and they are immediatly in conflict on how to prepare for the attack. Nearly a third of the men are in the infirmary, as the welsh company tries to somehow survive with no help in sight. Based on a true story.
The movie starts with a silent section of slapsticks in BLUE and white and with piano music, giving an outline of Karin’s rise and fall. The rest is normal B&W movie. Karin does not belong to the nobility but nevertheless marries the mentally ill king Erik XIV and becomes queen of Sweden. The king’s skilled counsellor Göran Persson wants a royal policy supporting the people and supported by it. But in relation to the nobility the king oscillates between provocative strength and unpredictable weakness. Göran arranges that some very powerful noblemen are killed. Subsequently the king tries to have them convicted of high treason by the parliament. He forgets the manuscript, mixes up all facts, and the noblemen are acquitted. But Göran speedily gathers another parliament and has them convicted. Meanwhile Erik apologises because of the unjust murders. Hence Erik is dethroned and imprisoned. Göran is executed. Karin is restricted to a castle in Finland.
Convinced of his own intelligence and talent, René Brunel (Robert Hossein) decide to try that is above the bourgeois and kills an old pawnbroker in cold blood morality. Gallet commissioner (Jean Gabin), case manager, we will pursue relentlessly and subtle, convinced it has something to do with it. Suffocating pressure that added to the ideas raised in his talks with Lili Marcelini (Marina Vlady), a prostitute he has met recently, make awareness of René fall on him without mercy.
