Carl Alfred Andersen lives with Hildur and their four children in an abandoned grocery store. Their unorthodox lifestyle, and the fact that they are not married, is a continuing nuisance to the neighbourhood. Especially the head of the building society, Hermansen, will do anything to get the family to move away.
