Charles Masson, an advertising executive, is having an affair with Laura, the wife of his best friend, the architect François Tellier. Charles strangles Laura when one of their S&M games goes too far. Dazed, Charles walks out of the borrowed apartment in Paris and soon bumps into François in a nearby bistro. They drive back together to Versailles, where they have beautiful neighboring houses designed by François. The owner of the apartment had seen Laura and Charles together two months earlier, but she does not tell the police on the advice of François. Even though the police do not seem to have any clues to the crime, Charles has a difficult time coping with the situation, and trying to live a normal life with his two children and loving wife Hélène.

Once a professional boxer, Victor now has only one ambition: to coach a young amateur boxer to become a true champion. He immediately sees potential in a young railway worker, André, and, noting his enthusiasm for the sport, offers to train him. André accepts willingly, although he soon realises that Victor’s wife Blanche is not happy with the arrangement. She had been hoping that Victor would soon retire so that they can leave Paris and start a new life in the South of France. Andre’s attention is soon drawn away from his training when he starts to have an affair with a wealthy young woman, Corinne. In the end, he may have to choose between the woman he loves and his career as a world-class boxer.

In “Si Buana” (Yes, Buana), Villaggio is Wilson, a man in charge of a group of tourists in Kenya. In the final episode, “La Vacanze Intelligenti” (Intelligent Vacation), Alberto Sordi is Remo, a greengrocer who, along with his wife, gets sent on a vacation by their well-meaning children who want to “improve” their parents’ minds by sending them off to see Etruscan tombs, hear performances of atonal modern music, and appreciate the wonders of avant-garde modern art.

The freshly graduated psychiatrist David shall deliver an opinion about young Maddalena, who’s on trial for murdering a hunter. She claims she’s a witch and acted on behalf of the devil. The public health officer tells David, he’s got reason to believe her, that she’d been searching for a man who suits her needs for 300 years. Already after his first meeting with Maddalena, David begins to change: He ignores his beautiful young wife Cristina and loses himself in daydreams and hallucinations in which he participates in Inquisition questioning and erotic witches’ circles.

Juju, a drunken oaf who feels the need of being important to someone—anyone—and his friend, an artist, are forced at gunpoint to care for a fugitive, Peirre Barbier, in Juju’s broken-down home. The urge for being needed is such in Juju that he gives up drinking and takes care of Pierre, even after he learns that Pierre has been making love to Maria, the girl Juju loves. Plans are made for Pierre’s escape, and Maria is to join him over her father’s protests. Marua steals money from her father and begs Juju to take it to Pierre. When Juju finds that Pierre plans to double-cross Maria, he kills him. Juju takes the money to his artist-friend, he tells him to return it to Maria, as coming from Pierre, so she won’t think she has been betrayed. Juju returns to drinking and being a drunk.
