A mine owner dies and leaves half to Gene and half to easterner Barbara Erwin. Gene wants to continue operation of the mine as requested in the will but Barbara wants to sell and leave with her half of the money.
A teen-age rat pack of the Detroit slums, the Purple Gang, headed by psychotic William Joseph “Honeyboy” Willard, teams with adult hijackers during prohibition and in three years controls the city’s underworld. Detective Bill Harley is given a special assignment to break the gang.
Joe O’Hara, a hard fighter, wants the championship title for the money to finance the concert pianist career of his brother Mike, who also could be a good fighter. When Joe fights the title bout someone tells his opponent, Tiger Johnson, that one of his eyes is bad and Johnson works on it until Joe loses the fight and his eyesight. Mike is enraged and starts training for the ring. He works himself up to the title bout with Tiger Johnson.
Abner Weaver, a small-town mayor in the Ozarks, through the music of performers from ‘The Grand Ole Opry,” and the antics and help of his family and the local citizens, manages to pass a legislative bill to help the farmers, and also wins the election for state government from a group of crooked politicians.
Carol likes her boss, but does not get involved with him as so many other secretaries would. She instead falls for a poor riveter and leaves to be married. She soon finds that the poor riveter is the son of Dan Kingdon and is loaded. When she gets her pretty ex-roommate a job as Bart’s secretary, she now has to stand by her convictions as she “trusts” Diane. Aunt Agatha does not and tells Carol that she is foolish.
