When former POW, Paolo, returns from India to his middle-class home in Rome at the end of the war, he is relieved to find his wife, Patrizia, and young son alive, managing to get by thanks to Patrizia’s business in lampshades. They also enjoy the moral support of the jovial, elderly Neapolitan widower, who is their new neighbour, Il professore. However disaster strikes when Patrizia commits a murder – her response to a mysterious man’s attempt to blackmail her to have sex with him. Country lawyer Lynn Hollister comes to the city to investigate the murder of a friend found shot after spending the evening in The Inferno, a night club that fronts for an illicit gambling operation. It is covertly run by an affable but corrupt politician, ‘Boss’ Tom Cameron, who uses voter fraud to maintain influence on city hall and the governor’s mansion. Hollister learns that his friend was a winner in a dice game on the night of the murder and threatened exposure of Cameron’s vice racket. Complications arise when other underworld forces vie to take over Cameron’s operation, and Holister falls in love with Cameron’s beautiful daughter.

But human greed and weakness compound to disrupt the project.

With his high school graduation behind him, Andy Hardy decides that as an adult, it’s time to start living his life. Charles Engle has been caught embezzling. He writes a suicide note, and goes out wandering on the town. Small-time hustler Bill O’Brian sees him give a couple of big tips, figures he’s rich, and plans to take him over to a big-time card game and fleece him. He enlists Nina Barone to help get Engle to the game. She goes along, but is more interested in O’Brien than in his schemes. Meanwhile, a perpetually drunk and none too successful playwright, Gene Gibbons, finds the suicide note. He cooks up a scheme (with the reluctant aid of O’Brien) to get the money Engle needs to pay back his employer and save his life.
