His Motorbike, Her Island (1986)
After being threatened by his girlfriend’s brother, Ko (Riki Takeuchi) goes on a trip on his Kawasaki to contemplate his options. He meets Miiyo (Kiwako Harada) by chance, and the two stay in touch. He later receives an invitation to her island, where he begins to teach her how to ride, and quickly falls for her. Miiyo is an extremely quick study, and the two are a well-matched pair. However, her obsession with motorbikes seems to be leading her down a dangerous path.

Director: Nobuhiko Ôbayashi
Writer: Yoshio Kataoka (novel), Ikuo Sekimoto
Actors: Kiwako Harada, Riki Takeuchi, Noriko Watanabe, Tomokazu Miura

His Motorbike, Her Island is a beautiful, emotional, and visually stunning film by Nobuhiko Obayashi. The film is in both black-and-white and color, and freely drifts between the two (occasionally those are not mutually exclusive). It stars the legendary Riki Takeuchi in his first role, whose youthful looks may come as a surprise to those used to seeing him in roles from many V-Cinema and Takashi Miike films, along with Kiwako Harada (The Drifting Classroom, The Enchantment) and Noriko Watanabe (Totto Channel, Muscle Heat). It also features Tomokazu Miura (Outrage, Adrift in Tokyo, M/Other), Takahiro Tamura (Muddy River, Tora! Tora! Tora!), Ryoichi Takayanagi (The Little Girl Who Conquered Time, School in the Crosshairs) and Toru Minegishi (Fudoh: The New Generation, Departures). Brief appearances are made by Ittoku Kishibe and Shigeru Izumiya as well. Many of Obayashi’s usual collaborators return, with cinematography by Yoshitaka Sakamoto, art direction by Kazuo Satsuya, music by Naoshi Miyazaki, and sound design by Shohei Hayashi. The film was 3rd on the top 10 list at the 8th Yokohama Film Festival, where Watanabe won Best Supporting Actress and Harada won Best New Actress.
