He does befriend another priest whom he takes into his confidence but soon realizes that his suspicions should have been reversed. The fake priest is in fact Gustave Flambeau a professional art thief and an expert at disguise. After he gets away with the cross, Brown refuses to work with the police, insisting that he wants to save the man’s soul, not put him in prison. With the assistance of his friend Lady Warren, Father Brown sets a trap for Flambeau but Brown realizes that his work is only just beginning.

All this ends badly because the sweet child plus the boyfriend who wants to change class, with the help of the lover who is a handsome boy, the rich lady who is the mother of the bitch, and against the advice of the guy from Oporto who does not do much thinking, kill a theatre caretaker who didn’t know he was doing there.
However, in the middle of this story the husband of Maria’s mother appears and things get really serious.

As his syndicate is eroding quickly, a major heavy industries company offers his gang the chance to chase some vagrants out of a shantytown where they are squatting on land where a factory is to be built.
