After his political days are over, Red decides to become a fireman. He takes the exam, goes to fire college and is stationed at Company 27. Red does just enough work to get by, but then his lack of attention causes his best friend Skillet to be injured. For his punishment, Red is suspended and then transferred to a fire boat. When he discovers that Hussin plans to marry Mahla, a girl from a rival tribe, in order to build a coalition against the French, Kincaid kidnaps Mahla. Hussin forcefully takes her back, but by now his planned attack on Tarfa is crumbling and Mahla has begun to fall in love with Kincaid.
