Saigo no tokkotai (1970)
Saigo no Tokkotai (The Last Kamikaze) is set in the final months of World War II, when it was increasingly obvious that Japan was going to lose the war. The Kamikaze squadrons weren’t so much an attempt at achieving victory as a way drawing the Americans to the negotiating table. Focussing on a reluctant squadron leader (Tsuruta Koji) whose job is to send his men out to die, the film for the most part manages to avoid the sentimentality that would be so tempting for many writers, and instead gives us an account that’s incredibly believable. It manages to be poignant without lapsing into mawkishness; nor is it a glorification of the Samurai Code. It’s simply a story about the men who know that their duty is to protect their country, and who know that they only way they can do this is to fly suicide missions.
